Return The Trendy Base Is Here: Epoxy PrimerDon’t you think that the word epoxy is very 'in' right now? Although the history of these resins dates back to the first half of the 20th century, it is likely that in the Internet era they have become even more important because of the number of uses for this group of polymers.
But here this concept only matters to us as far as primers, bases, undercoats or whatever you want to call them are concerned.
FIRST OF ALL... WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
Basically, it is a primer that guarantees the durability of the paint on difficult materials and unifies the surface for a perfect finish. Since it is an aerosol product, it incorporates all the advantages that this implies: ease of use, storage and durability of the product for future uses.
WHAT ARE THE UNIQUE QUALITIES OF EPOXY PRIMER?
It could be said that what characterizes this primer is the different performances it combines and how some of them have been optimized:
- High adhesion on difficult surfaces such as polished metals, plastics and more.
Galvanized metals, for example, are surfaces on which the paint does not have a very long life span: it will peel off over time. To prevent this from happening, not just any primer will do. Epoxy it is.
- Chemical and mechanical resistance
The epoxy primer fights against oxidation, being a base layer that increases the adhesion of the paint against mechanical wear.
- Unifies the surface
The epoxy primer has the ability to unify the pore and irregularities of the surface working almost as if it were a filler.
ARE THESE QUALITIES NOT FOUND IN OTHER PRODUCTS?
NO! (Not exactly)
For example, phosphate primer, developed to serve as a perfect base for polished metals, does not have as much corrosion protection and, more importantly, is not as versatile when it comes to being used on other materials such as plastics. Needless to say, the bonding property of the primer does not guarantee the protection and adhesion that the epoxy primer does.
BORING BUT USEFUL SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION ABOUT THE EPOXY PRIMER...
There are specific studies and case studies that have shown how the use of epoxy primer can lead to significant improvements in the service life of painted materials and a reduction in long-term maintenance costs...
- Automotive Industry: In the automotive industry, the use of epoxy primers on car bodies and metal components has shown positive results in corrosion resistance and paint durability. For example, studies have shown that applying epoxy primer before the final coat of paint helps protect against oxidation and mechanical wear, thus prolonging the service life of vehicles and reducing the need for frequent refinishing.
- Civil Construction: In construction projects, especially in metal and concrete structures exposed to severe environmental conditions, the use of epoxy primers has been crucial. These primers are applied to prepare surfaces prior to the application of protective or decorative paints. Research has documented how the proper application of epoxy primer can prevent corrosion and maintain the structural integrity of materials longer, which reduces maintenance costs and extends the life of structures.
- Industrial Infrastructure: In industrial facilities such as chemical plants, refineries and power plants, where surfaces are exposed to aggressive chemicals and extreme environmental conditions, the use of epoxy primers has been essential. These coatings help protect metal structures against corrosion and premature deterioration, minimizing preventive maintenance costs and extending intervals between repainting jobs.
- Case Studies and Comparisons: In addition to specific studies in industry sectors, comparisons between different types of primers have also been conducted to evaluate their long-term effects. These studies typically include analyses of paint adhesion, abrasion resistance, color stability and corrosion protection under various environmental and usage conditions. The results of these investigations provide concrete data on the economic and performance benefits of epoxy primers compared to alternatives.
In summary, it has been consistently demonstrated that the proper use of epoxy primers can offer significant benefits in terms of extended service life of painted materials and reduce long-term maintenance costs. These findings support the adoption of epoxy primers in various industries where durability and surface protection are critical to efficient operation and economic sustainability.
